In the hospital or at the doctor’s office, it’s the nurses whom patients trust to answer their questions simply, directly, and understandably. So who better to provide inside information about how to manage common health conditions, apply simple home treatments, and make the most of the health care system? Compiling the expertise of 550 nursing schools and 100 nurses nationwide, Ask a Nurse is a one-of-a-kind quick-reference book of invaluable hands-on treatment and healing tips. Every word in it has been written by nurses: nurses who practice nursing, nurses who teach it, nurses who spend all their days working with and caring for patients. They know what works and what doesn’t; they can tell you when you need a doctor’s care and what you can do yourself. Ask a Nurse focuses on the everyday complaints — acne, allergies, cuts and scrapes, diarrhea, flu, hemorrhoids, insomnia, stress, and more — that you can most easily treat yourself, at home in most cases. Arranged alphabetically, the entries explain common conditions, list detailed symptoms, and offer top-to-bottom treatment "menus," featuring everything from effective over-the-counter medications to tried-and-true home remedies and self-care. Alternative and herbal therapies are included: readers will learn, for instance, that devil’s claw can ease arthritis pain, tea tree oil can relieve athlete’s foot, and a tea bag can reduce swelling. The nurses address men’s, women’s, and children’s unique health issues separately, with special attention paid to identifying and treating addictions and eating disorders; showing what type of contraception to use and how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases; and highlighting when infertility and sexual dysfunction can be handled at home. The nurses also present a complete guide to consumer rights, dispensing tips on how to make a hospital stay more comfortable, choose a reliable pharmacist, put together a home medical kit, and finally, decide when a living will or do-not-resuscitate order is appropriate. With easy-to-find reader-friendly boxes and charts supplementing the A-Z directory of everyday ailments, Ask a Nurse offers readers all the comfort, care, and reassuring practical advice for which nurses have always been known. With 100 nurses putting their names to their personal tricks of the trade, this book provides the insider information that you can use to make wise decisions regarding your health.

Many patients who present to district (first-referral) level hospitals require surgical treatment for trauma, obstetric, abdominal or orthopaedic emergencies. Often surgery cannot be safely postponed to allow their transfer to a secondary or tertiary-level hospital, but many district hospitals in developing countries have no specialist surgical teams and are staffed by medical, nursing and paramedical personnel who perform a wide range of surgical procedures, often with inadequate training. The quality of surgical and acute care is often further constrained by poor facilities, inadequate low-technology apparatus and limited supplies of drugs, materials and other essentials. The mission of the team responsible for Devices and Clinical Technology in the World Health Organization Department of Blood Safety and Clinical Technology (WHO/BCT) is to promote the quality of clinical care through the identification, promotion and standardization of appropriate procedures, equipment and materials, particularly at district hospital level. WHO/BCT has identified education and training as a particular priority, especially for non-specialist practitioners who practise surgery and anaesthesia. It has therefore developed Surgical Care at the District Hospital as a practical resource for individual practitioners and for use in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, in-service training and continuing medical education programmes. The manual is a successor of three earlier publications that are widely used throughout the world and that remain important reference.
The Pre-hospital Obstetric Emergency Training  (POET) programme provides an introduction to the obstetric patient and the anatomical and physiological changes that occur during pregnancy (including interpretation of patient-held records and rapid assessment of the obstetric patient). It includes clear definitions and describes risk factors, diagnosis and pre-hospital management of significant problems that occur in both early and late pregnancy and the immediate postnatal period. These are all situations that the pre-hospital practitioner may attend. This text and the accompanying integrated on-line and ‘hands on’ course will help practitioners identify and manage a range of time-critical obstetric emergencies specifically in the pre-hospital setting, and provides a structured examination and assessment technique as an aid to determining what treatment should be provided before transport, as well as when and how urgently transport should be initiated. POET is of relevance to paramedics, ambulance staff, doctors, and nurses working in the emergency pre-hospital setting and to midwives facilitating home births. It will also be of considerable value to medical and nursing practitioners working in Emergency Departments and unscheduled care settings where immediate access to skilled obstetric assistance is not available.
Over the past couple of decades, individuals have come to rely more on home health care visits for their health care needs. While there have been decreases in hospital stays and in the percentage of older persons living in nursing homes the consequence has been the emergence of a new type of occupational crime: home health care abuse. In considering offending in the home health care industry, it is important to focus on crimes by and against home health care professionals. This book is one of the first to fully address abuses occurring in the home health care industry. Its intent is not to suggest that home health care is a dangerous field for workers and consumers; rather, the intent is to shed some light on the types of misconduct found in home health care. Each chapter will include a wealth of examples to illustrate that these incidents actually are real, devastating, and significant. At the end of each chapter the reader will find a series of discussion questions designed to encourage the reader to reflect back on the content of the chapter through the eyes of those involved in the response to home health care fraud. Also included are Web site addresses where readers can learn more about the offenses and other resources to help demonstrate ways to deal with the problem. It is intended for criminal justice officials, health care professionals, academics, and researchers who want to better understand the nature of offending in the home health care industry. It is also intended for use in criminal justice, sociology, and white-collar crime courses exploring crime in the workplace as well as courses examining the home health care field. Chapters include: Home, Home on the Range: Where Health Care is Provided and Crimes are Committed; Home Health Care Professionals as Victims and Witnesses; Crimes by Home Health Professionals: Violence, Theft, and Deception; Responding to Crime in the Home Health Care Field: Strategies, Obstacles, and Issues; and Preventing Home Health Care Misconduct.
Nearly everyone in the nursing and other professions has had to say at least once in their career, I have to write about this This is the authors account of events that touched her in some way. Anyone who has been a patient in a hospital or nursing home, student nurses, nurses, and other health care professionals will resonate with the events in the book. While the names of the characters in the book are fictitious, the events themselves did take place historically. The dialogue has been kept as simple as possible, and reflects the flavor of the patients dialogue. Enjoy. This practical and comprehensive text serves as a step-by-step 'hands on' workbook approach to learning 12-Lead EKG interpretation. The authors introduce the content and technical understanding needed for the student to interpret, analyze, and 'comprehend' the variety of rhythm strips involved with 12-lead EKGs. The book begins by discussing basic principles of anatomy and physiology, including a review of the heart's electrical system. The remaining chapters introduce the most vital concepts to be mastered before continuing on. Each section is also followed by convenient practice worksheets, allowing students to fine tune their interpretive skills. Key Features:.: Clinical Reasoning features drive home the clinical connection, and encourage clinical reasoning development.; Key Concepts highlight important concepts within the text; Segment of the 12-Lead ECG rhythm strip is enlarged to ensure that the student views the appropriate lead, yet sees the entire 12-lead strip. Shaw (political science, Illinois Wesleyan University) provides a detailed overview of the healthcare debate for students, general readers, journalists, and researchers. He traces the development of the controversy over the government’s role in healthcare from the early 1800s, emphasizing major reform efforts of the mid-20th century. An introductory chapter frames the question of why there is no national health insurance in America. Eight chronological chapters focus on government involvement in public health and on healthcare financing and delivery. Appendices offer a timeline and an annotated list of further reading.
