When it comes to living a longer healthier life scientists are discovering that less may be more. By following the THE CR WAY a revolutionary plan which provides the body with 30% fewer calories than what the body traditionally requires many people are seeing a dramatic increase in longevity and health. And while the program is new and unconventional the scientific evidence suggests that Calorie Restriction dieters are on to something: according to a NYTimes article it "is the only strategy known to extend life consistentinly in a variety of species." Collaborating with a well respected medial doctor McGlothin and Averill a husband-and-wife team who are also members of The Calorie Restriction Society will first outline the scientifically proven benefits of Calorie Restriction: it slows down the aging process; protects against cancer cardiovascular disease and diabetes; cleanses toxic cellular waste; and increases mental capabilities energy and a sense of optimism. And of course it helps you lose weight and keep weight off. How does it work? Calorie Restriction limits calories but boosts the nutritional value of every single calorie you ingest. As a result the body increases the elasticity of artery walls reducing blood pressure and cholesterol levels and slowing the aging process. They will also detail the questions and controversies surrounding the plan — its risks its difficulties and its ill-conceived comparisons to eating disorders. McGlothin and Averill also show you how you can gradually and safely incorporate the diet into your daily routine. They spell out which foods are nutrient-dense; teach you how to cook each food to reduce its glycemic content (an important factor); provide menus and recipes for quick and easy reference; and show you how to use diet-tracking software essential to the strict calorie-counting aspect of the diet. And for those who want to retrieve some of the benefits without sacrificing all the calories they will also show you how to effectively manage the diet in moderation. Growing in popularity and media coverage THE CR WAY is not easy but could point to the wave of the future for those that want to lose weight stay healthy and live longer.

London, 1732. William Hogarth made a terrible error of judgment. He painted the Prince of Wales leaving a prostitute’s bed. A pregnant prostitute. And now she’s been killed. Hogarth has been warned. The only thing the girl’s killers don’t know is her child had been born – and Hogarth saw to it that he survived… This powerful secret – and the painting that proves it – has been protected by Sir Oliver Peters’ family for centuries, for Queen and country. But now it’s been stolen – on his watch. He heard the rumour about where it was, but he’s not the only one, and as the others are brutally murdered in quick succession, Peters is in a deadly race against time – and some very dangerous people – to find it before it’s too late. Why do ooligotrophic lakes have high oxygen content?
hi everyone,
I do not understand this correlation:
lakes with low biological production have HIGH oxygen levels.
or- lakes with HIGH biological production have LOW oxygen levels… (eutrophic)
if there is high levels of biological production, why isn’t there high levels of oxygen since oxygen is a byproduct of photosynthesis?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Oligotrophic lakes suggest that there are little nutrients to sustain life.I think you’re assuming that biological production equals plant life. Think about lakes producing biological marine life. If you consider that fish breath oxygen through their gills, a lake without marine animals would have high levels of oxygen. Lakes with an abundance of marine life would have lower levels of oxygen.

Dr. James W. Kalat’s BIOLOGICAL PSYCHOLOGY is the most widely used text in the course area, and for good reason: an extremely high level of scholarship, clear and occasionally humorous writing style, and precise examples. Throughout all eleven editions, Kalat’s goal has been to make biological psychology accessible to psychology students, not just to biology majors and pre-meds. Another goal has been to convey the excitement of the search for biological explanations of behavior, and Kalat–a skilled teacher–delivers. Updated with new topics, examples, and recent research findings–and supported by a strong media package–this text speaks to today’s students and instructors.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles The biological halflife or elimination half life of a substance is the time it takes for a substance (for example a metabolite, drug, signalling molecule, radioactive nuclide, or other substance) to lose half of its pharmacologic, physiologic, or radiologic activity, as per the MeSH definition. In a medical context, halflife may also describe the time it takes for the blood plasma concentration of a substance to halve ( plasma halflife ) its steadystate. The relationship between the biological and plasma halflives of a substance can be complex, due to factors including accumulation in tissues, active metabolites, and receptor interactions. Biological halflife is an important pharmacokinetic parameter and is usually denoted by the abbreviation t1/2. At the invitation of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), a round-table discussion was held on 9 and 10 March 2000, dealing with future possibilities for biomonitoring in occupational and environmental medicine. Biomonitoring has reached a high standard in Germany over the past 30 years, not least due to the fact that the results of the Senate commission on materials hazardous to health at the workplace have been directly implemented as part of the jurisdiction relating to occupational safety. This book combines the expertise gathered from various areas within toxicology, occupational medicine, immunology and human genetics, right up to analysis and epidemiology. Throughout, the focus is on comprehensively determining the diagnostic validity of cytogenetic parameters as well as biochemical and biological effect markers for the prevention of illnesses resulting from harmful substances. Thus, the discussion allowed an initial exchange of ideas, pointing to future research, so as to maintain Germany’s leading role in this important and rapidly expanding field. “…provides an excellent tutorial on the use of biological monitoring in occupational and environmental medicine…should be read by everyone involved with exposure analysis.” —Chemical Chemistry
Biological immortality is the absence of a sustained increase in rate of mortality as a function of chronological age. A cell or organism that does not experience, or at some future point will cease, aging, is biologically immortal. However this definition of immortality was challenged in the new Handbook of the Biology of Aging, because the increase in rate of mortality as a function of chronological age may be negligible at extremely old ages (latelife mortality plateau). But even though the rate of mortality ceases to increase in old age, those rates are very high (e.g., 50 chance of surviving another year at 110 or 115 years of age).No actual organism or individual cell is inviolably immortal (i.e. invincible or indestructible ). Any real living object enjoying biological immortality can die upon receiving a sufficient injury or otherwise being killed or destroyed. Biological organisation, or the hierarchy of life, is the hierarchy of complex biological structures and systems that define life using a reductionistic approach. The traditional hierarchy, as detailed below, extends from atoms to biospheres. The higher levels of this scheme are often referred to as ecological organisation. Each level in the hierarchy represents an increase in organisational complexity, with each object being primarily composed of the previous levels basic unit. The basic principle behind the organisation is the concept of emergencethe properties and functions found at a hierarchical level are not present and irrelevant at the lower levels. Organisation furthermore refers to the high degree of order of an organism. Ideally, individual organisms of the same species have the same arrangement of the same structures. For example, the typical human has a torso with two legs at the bottom and two arms on the sides and a head on top. It is extremely rare to find a human that has all of these structures but in a different arrangement. It is now widely recognised that biological psychiatry is rapidly coming into its own. For over the last three decades dramatic advances in this young discipline have been made, all of which attest to the staying power of the experimental method. Those who made this revolution in knowledge happen are a breed of investigators availing themselves of the tools of molecular biology, pharmacology, genetics, and perhaps, above all, the technology of neuroimaging. The introduction of the interdisciplinary method of approach to the study of psychopathology had made it very clear that neuroimaging, as a set of techniques, is unique in that it is gradually providing us with evidence supporting Kraepelin’s original view that mental illness is closely associated with abnormal changes in the brain. Broadly speaking, there are presently two structural techniques in neuroimaging – computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) – and three functional techniques – single photon emission tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Through PET technology, for example, we have learned that, in early brain development, the primitive areas, mostly the brain stem and thalamus, are the first to show high activity in an infant. This is followed by the development of cortical areas by year one. Between the ages of four to 10, the cortex is almost twice as active in the child as in the adult. This information alerts us to what might happen in the way of trauma in abused children, especially those under the age of three. Child abuse increases the risk of physical changes, not only in the stress systems, but also in brain development (Glaser and Weissman). In addition to the difficult problem of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), we have to take into account the possibility of other types of mental illness as the consequences of child abuse. These include depression, eating disorders, and drug and alcohol problems. The combination of PET and fMRI represents a more remarkable example of the power of neuroimaging since the two have made it feasible to map accurately in vitro identifiable cortical fields, or networks. In a landmark NIH investigation of human cortical reorganization (plasticity), persuasive evidence was brought forward showing that the process of learning as a motor task involves a specific network of neurons. These neurons occur in the cortical field that is responsible for that particular task. Such findings are important partly because they provide evidence supporting the current notion that labor in the cortex is divided among ensembles of specialized neurons that cooperate in the performance of complex tasks. Cooperation, then, in this, sense implies crosstalk among ensembles and that signals are both processed and retransmitted to neighbouring ensembles. To understand the workings of these ensembles, much better spatial and temporal resolution in functional brain mapping is required. This can

Biological control of weeds has been practised for over 100 years and Australia has been a leader in this weed management technique. The classical example of control of prickly pears in Australia by the cactus moth Cactoblastis cactorum, which was imported from the Americas, helped to set the future for biocontrol of weeds in many countries. Since then there have been many projects using Classical Biological Control to manage numerous weed species, many of which have been successful. Importantly, there have been no serious negative non-target impacts the technique, when practised as it is in Australia, is safe and environmentally friendly. Economic assessments have shown that biocontrol of weeds in Australia has provided exceedingly high benefit-to-cost ratios. This book reviews biological control of weeds in Australia to 2011, covering over 90 weed species and a multitude of biological control agents and potential agents. Each chapter has been written by practising biological control of weeds researchers and provides details of the weed, the history of its biological control, exploration for agents, potential agents studied and agents released and the outcomes of those releases. Many weeds were successfully controlled, some were not, many projects are still underway, some have just begun, however all are reported in detail in this book. Biological Control of Weeds in Australia will provide invaluable information for biological control researchers in Australia and elsewhere. Agents used in Australia could be of immense value to other countries that suffer from the same weeds as Australia. The studies reported here provide direction to future research and provide examples and knowledge for researchers and students.

Over the past several years, microwave imaging has grown as a promising technique for the imaging of biological structures. Thanks to the high sensitivity, simplicity, low cost and the use of nonionizing radiations, it seems to be a valid complement to the more traditional techniques, such as radiography, magnetic resonance and ultrasound. In this work, the capability of the microwave imaging technique to detect early stage breast cancer and lesions of the knee (in particular meniscal tears and lesions of the tendons) is analysed. For both the applications, a preliminary numerical study is presented, followed by experiments performed on realistic phantoms (breast) and real biological tissues (knee). Results demonstrate the great potential of this technique in both the considered fields. This work, besides introducing the topic of microwave imaging of biological tissues in a simple and complete way, poses the basis for clinical campaigns necessary to evaluate in vivo the capability of this method for the detection of breast cancer and lesions of the knee. It captures the biologically relevant component of welfare, wellbeing or the quality of life. It emphasizes that the human experience ought not to be thought of in one dimension: wellbeing encompasses more than the command over goods and services. Health in general, including the frequency and duration of sickness, and longevity, has a contribution to welfare independent of income. The biological standard of living is proxied by such indicators as longevity, morbidity and frequently by the physical stature of a population. This volume covers recent developments in both fundamental and applied research in biological nitrogen fixation. It emphasizes the application of biological nitrogen fixation for sustainable agriculture, which should lead to poverty alleviation, environmental protection, and good agricultural practices generally. The roles of, and advances in, plant breeding, plant molecular biology, nodule physiology, and symbiotic and associative interactions between plants and microbes in sustaining agricultural productivity and soil fertility are described. The evolution of symbioses and nitrogen fixation are also covered in this volume. To ensure high agricultural productivity, while protecting the environment (both soil and water resources), requires plant cultivars that also respond to beneficial microbes. The volume, therefore, describes the physiology and genomics of nitrogen-fixing bacteria together with the biochemistry and molecular genetics of the nitrogenase enzyme that actually fixes atmospheric nitrogen to a usable form. This volume, which covers the most recent data on the role of nitrogen fixation in agriculture and forestry and on the biology of both plants and nitrogen-fixing microbes, is intended to serve as a useful reference for students and researchers, both in the laboratory (academic and commercial) and in the field.

Dr. Heinonen reviews and critically evaluates the scientific literature on the biological role of inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi ) published from 1940 to the end of 1999. He describes and classifies all known biochemical reactions that produce Ppi; describes and evaluates all published methods used in biological Ppi; and compiles and critically evaluates information on the concentration of PPi (with the conclusion that, contrary to common belief, PPi exists throughout the living world in rather high concentrations). Many reactions in which PPi is used as a biochemical energy source instead of ATP have been described in recent decades, especially in bacteria, protists, and plants. These reactions are evaluated from the bioenergetic and regulatory points of view. Also considered is the possible role of PPi as a source of biochemical energy in the primitive phases of life, before ATP. Data is presented on the regulatory role of PPi in living systems, such as activities of enzymes, fidelity of syntheses of macromolecules, and proliferation of cells. PPi may also regulate the formation and dissolution of bone as well as pathologic calcification of soft tissues and the formation of urinary stones. The formation of calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals in the extracellular fluids of joints cause the disease called pseudogout. Biological Role of Inorganic Pyrophosphate book is a unique and invaluable source of references (about 1120) and summarized data for professionals who study or plan to study the role of PPi in living systems. Many different branches of science (biochemistry, microbiology, bioenergetics, plant physiology, parasitology, evolution, orthopedics, rheumatology) have involvement with PPi. How many medical computer systems for 10 employees?
How many computers should a medical doctors office have with 3 physicians, 1 manager, 6 medical assistance, and 4 physicians assistance?
Ideally, each employee should have their own computer, if for no other reason, privacy concerns. If this isn’t feasible, you’ll want to further analyze your specific needs person by person. Will they all be in the office at the same time? Do they all need the same access, or should each person only be able to access specific areas in your client files/billing/scheduling?
Whether you’re purchasing equipment for a new business, expanding your technology base for a growing company or simply updating older equipment, you need to figure out what works best for you.
Best of luck!
Cheers,

SiCKO is more like a controlled howl of protest than a documentary. Toning down the rhetoric of past efforts–no CEOs, congressmen, or celebrities were accosted in the making of this film–Michael Moore’s latest provocation is just as heartfelt, if not more heartbreaking. As he clarifies from the outset, his subject isn’t the 45 million Americans without insurance, but those whose coverage has fai…
It’s impossible to walk away from John Q. without thinking about the film that could have been. The pathetic state of health care in the U.S. and the desperate behavior it engenders is not only worthy but edgy material; no doubt director Nick Cassavetes (She’s So Lovely) and Denzel Washington (as well as Robert Duvall, Ray Liotta, James Woods, and Anne Heche) were drawn to the provocative pitch. T…
When viewed from a cranky perspective, this by-the-book David vs. Goliath story doesn’t offer any surprises, and it’s a bit sad to watch director Francis Coppola (who also adapted John Grisham’s bestseller) squandering his once-glorious talent on such conventional Hollywood fare. In a more charitable light, however, there’s great pleasure to be found in Coppola’s intelligent, no-nonsense handling …

Scholarly Essay from the year 2010 in the subject Biomedical technic, printed singlesided, grade: , (Jade University), language: English, abstract: The ultrasonic therapy appertains to the procedures of the Physical Therapy. It is a part of mechanical therapy, because ultrasound consists of acoustic waves (longitudinal, wavelike spreading of smallest pressure variations of a medium as for example air or liquids) with a high frequency. In addition the ultrasonic therapy can be used as thermotherapy. The ultrasonic therapy is also, in the widest sense, a form of the electrotherapy. This justifies itself, because the ultrasound is being obtained from electric energy. The therapy form is used particularly with chronically degenerative illnesses of the human movement apparatus. This abstract shall give a basic overview of the ultrasound and of the transfer chain; from the ultrasound to the human skin. Biological Koi filters incorporate two stages of filtration. The first stage is the settlement or entrapment section of the filter. Solid organic matter is dragged into the settlement area by way of gravity and current produced by a pond pump, waterfall or fountain, which aid in the circulation of the pond water. Now being that the settlement area is the first stage of filtration, it has to be very efficient at it’s portion of solid waste collecting. The desired end result is good clean healthy water for your Koi. For the filter to produce such clean water, very little solid waste can be allowed to enter the biological section of Koi filters.
The conditions required in the biological section of filtration are the support and productivity of hearty growth among the nitrifying bacteria occupying the filter media we have provided there, while at the same time keeping conditions that promote the development of heterotrophic bacteria isolated to the settlement section. This division allows for the break down of ammonia, into the less harmful compound nitrate, to proceed efficiently by the nitrifying bacteria. So the more efficient the settlement are is at collecting and removing solid organic waste from the incoming water, the better the biological section will be at converting dissolved pollutants into less harmful compounds, thus giving us our desired result of good, clean healthy water produced by Koi filters.
Nitrate at low levels is good for your Koi, however it is also good for algae as nitrate is a prime food source for them. There are two types of problem algae to deal with in Koi ponds, green water algae and blanket weed algae. Green water algae are just as their name suggests. They are microscopic algae in the pond water that turns the water green. They pose no direct health threat to Koi and are actually beneficial to them. You see, Koi eat the invisible algae, which enhances the Koi’s colour. However, during the warmer summer season, green algae use a substantial portion of oxygen in the pond water. This could leave your Koi struggling with the deplenished amount of oxygen left.
Vegetable filters are a natural way of getting rid of green water algae. If you have plants in your pond then this will help, as plants would use the nitrate, leaving the green algae with little to nothing to survive on. Biological Koi filters, which include UV (ultra violet) filtering, are also highly recommended. Pond water passing through the filter is also passed through a UV filter which kills the green algae. The dead algae become part of the trapped sediment in the filter to be emptied and cleaned later. The clean, clear water is passed back into the pond. Not so popular are algaecide chemicals. These would require routine and consistent use, as the problem would recur. In contrast, the use of magnets placed on the filter pipe would internally alter the algae cells either killing them or keeping them from reproducing entirely.
Blanket weed is a different kind of problem all together. Blanket weed algae are filamentous algae. It grows in long green strands attached to the pond walls. It does not pass through Koi filters to be dealt with by UV filtration. Although blanket weed poses no threat to Koi, it is simply unsightly. One benefit of blanket weed is that it also uses up nitrate, which stops green water algae producing.
To ensure the best possible natural environment for your Koi, always maintain your filtration system with routine cleaning. The reward of healthy Koi thriving in your pond is well worth the effort of keeping their water pollution free.
